The Flowerpot pendant lamp by Verner Panton, published by &Tradition, is an iconic piece of Scandinavian design that embodies both timeless elegance and the bold spirit of the 1960s.
Designed in 1968 by the Danish designer Verner Panton, this lamp takes its name from the pacifist βFlower Powerβ movement, which advocated peace, love and harmony at a time of social and cultural upheaval.
Design and features
The Flowerpot suspension lamp is distinguished by its simple yet ingenious silhouette: it's made up of two lacquered metal half-spheres arranged face to face. The larger one forms a dome that houses the light source, while the smaller one, placed underneath, acts as a diffuser, creating soft, directional, glare-free lighting. This playful geometry, combined with a palette of bright and varied colours (from vermilion red to cobalt blue, as well as more neutral shades such as grey beige and matt white), reflects Panton's avant-garde approach, which favoured colour and form to evoke emotions.
Available in a range of sizes - including VP1 (Γ 23 cm), VP2 (Γ 50 cm) and VP7 (Γ 37 cm) - the Flowerpot can be adapted to a variety of spaces, from kitchens to living rooms and public spaces. It is usually fitted with a matching 3-metre textile cord and uses an E27 bulb (not supplied), with a maximum wattage of 40W or a low-energy alternative.
Historical and cultural context
The Flowerpot was created in an exciting context: in 1968, student revolts shook Paris, Rome and the United States, while humanity prepared to set foot on the Moon. Verner Panton, a major figure in twentieth-century design, captured this spirit of renewal and freedom. His lamp quickly became a symbol of the 70s, popular in restaurants, exhibitions and domestic interiors. His design, both minimalist and daring, has survived the decades without losing any of its modernity, making it a classic that has now been carefully reissued by &Tradition.
&Tradition and Panton's heritage
&Tradition, a Danish brand founded in 2010, is committed to re-editing historic pieces while respecting their essence. With the Flowerpot, it continues the legacy of Panton, known for his innovative use of materials, geometric shapes and psychedelic colours. The brand also offers metallic finishes such as brass and copper, adding a luxurious touch to this iconic design.
Why is it still popular?
The Flowerpot's strength lies in its timeless simplicity and its ability to blend into a variety of decors, whether retro, modern or eclectic. Its cheerful colours and clean lines make it both functional and decorative, adding a touch of character to any space.
In short, the Flowerpot suspension lamp by Verner Panton, published by &Tradition, is much more than a lamp: it's a work that tells the story of an era, a manifesto of creativity and a testament to the visionary genius of its creator.
